The site is self-guided, accessible and open all year except during cyclones and heavy rainfall.

  • Summer: 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM
  • Winter: 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM

Entrance Tickets

  • Adult: Rs 350
  • Child (5-12 years old): Rs 175

Accessing the Geopark

  • By car: Purchase tickets at our convenient drive-through booth. It's a 1.5 km drive to the waterfall and 3 km to the dunes, with parking available at both locations.
  • For adventurous walkers: Enjoy a scenic 3 km walk from the main entrance to the dunes, passing the viewpoints overlooking the stunning Chamarel waterfall. The full round trip is a 6 km trek.

How It All
Began?

The site opened to visitors in the 1960s and became Mauritius’ first geopark dedicated to geology, education and preservation.

Our Story

Volcanic origin

Basaltic lava cooled at different rates, producing iron and aluminium oxides. Over time, erosion and climate shaped the layered, visible colours of the dunes.

The phenomenon was first documented in 1879 by the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences, highlighting the soil’s resistance to erosion and rare visible stratification.
